Genealogical Gems

What is your favourite genealogical document?

This is the Jewish Wedding Contract for one set of my great-grandparents. When it comes to documents in our family’s hands it is probably my most prized possession.

Ketuba for Myer and Mary Goldstone.jpg

Written in Aramaic, this contract was written for the marriage of Avraham Meir Fig and Feige Mara Bro. It is dated on the Hebrew date that corresponded with the evening of December 6th, 1907 or the following day of the 7th. They were married in Varniai, Lithuania.

Their first child was born in Manchester, England on September 1st, 1908 and by this time they were known as Mary and Myer Goldstone.

Here is a photo of the ‘happy’ couple, probably about ten years later and certainly before 1919 when these photographs were used in their Alien Registration Books.
